Halloween sounds

10/1/2022 by Meg Cates, Au.D.

Have you ever noticed that scary movies use high pitch ringing as a common side effect when something scary is happening onscreen? That high-pitch whine sounds a lot like how a lot of my patients describe their tinnitus. I’ve heard any number of descriptions: “cicadas”, “ringing”, “squealing”. Even in the Harry Potter movies, there are times where this sound effect is used to express fear. What often happens in reality is that there are hair cells in the inner ear which are damaged or broken that then accidentally results in the brain being told there is a sound all the time. The most common tinnitus is high pitch, and the highest pitch of our ears is the most vulnerable to damage. If you or someone you love has tinnitus, a diagnostic hearing evaluation is a good idea 😊
